2016 BMW X2 Concept

It may be a concept for now but the X2 points the way for BMW’s next coupe-SUV after its debut at the Paris Motor Show

The one vehicle missing from BMW’s current SUV line up is a coupe version of the X1. The X3 has the X4 and the X5 has the X6 but since the second-generation X1 launched in 2015, a coupe version hasn’t followed. As yet that is.

Following BMW’s current naming format, a coupe version of the X1 would be called the X2, which makes the X2 Concept, which BMW unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, highly likely to make production.

These days a coupe-SUV is hardly breaking from convention as many now having gone before the X2. The headline here is the presence of BMW’s famous grille being turned upside down. The seventh-generation 5-Series sticks with the traditional trapezoidal grille shape so the X2 could be previewing a design change for future BMW SUVs.

In line with the X4 and X6, the X2 gets narrower and more aggressive headlights than it’s sibling X1, while the pronounced grille gives the X2 a ‘shark nose’ effect.

It has a rising window line into a famous Hofmeister kink, heavily sloped windscreen and panoramic sunroof, all of which give it a low sleek appearance. The X2 Concept sits on 21in alloy wheels and chunky tyres.

At the back, two tailpipes split the outer edges of a rear diffuser/skid plate, akin to a M140i or 340i, with a deep bumper and small boot opening. There’s a large roof mounted spoiler while the concept features taillights that are sleeker than on any other BMW SUV.

Should the X2 Concept become reality in 2017, then it’s likely to get the same 2.0-litre diesel variants (18d, 20d and 25d) and petrol (20i) as the X1, while a 3.0-litre from the M140i could headline as a performance version.
